The First NFT
The first known NFT was created back in May, 2014 by New York artist Kevin McCoy, and was sold to Anil Dash during a live presentation being referred to as “monetised graphics”. This NFT was known as ‘Quantum’ and was an octagonal-shaped animation.
The First NFT Project
The first NFT project, Etheria, was launched and demonstrated at DEVCON 1, 2015. This was Ethereums first developer conference, three months after the launch of the Ethereum blockchain. Etheria consisted of 457 purchasable digital tiles of land in hexagonal shapes. Most of the tiles went unsold until March 13, 2021, when suddenly they were sold for a total of $1.4M in under 24 hours.
The First Successful NFT Project
Leading up to the sudden frenzy, the public only became aware of NFTs with the success of a different NFT project titled ‘CryptoKitties’. CryptoKitties was an online game where players could adopt and trade virtual cats. The project went viral shortly after release, raising a $12.5M investment in March 2018, with some kitties selling for over $100,000 each.
